American Cockroaches

What are American cockroaches?

American cockroaches are the largest roaches to invade structures in the United States. These pests live both inside and outside our homes and businesses. Adults can grow up to two inches in length and are a reddish-brown color. Adults have wings and can and will fly short distances. Next to the German cockroach, the American cockroach is the most likely species to live close to people.

Are American cockroaches dangerous?

American cockroaches are dangerous; there are many problems associated with these pests when they move into our homes and businesses.

  • They are capable of transmitting disease pathogens to people.
  • They trigger allergic reactions and asthma attacks in some adults and young children.
  • They contaminate food and surfaces.
  • Their excrement will stain surfaces like counters, walls, and drawers.

Why do I have an American cockroach problem?

There are several ways that American cockroaches can find a way into your home. They move indoors by hitchhiking in or on things like boxes, furniture, pieces of wood, potted plants, and deliveries. These large roaches can also move inside through openings they discover in your home’s exterior. Food odors and moisture often attract them to the outside of our homes and then draw them indoors.

Where will I find American cockroaches?

American cockroaches live outside in damp, warm locations like behind tree bark, under mulch, within woodpiles, under fallen trees, and near drains and sewers. Flower beds and gardens also house these pests.

Periods of hot weather, a lack of food, or flooding are conditions that typically drive these pests indoors. Inside our homes, you’ll find them in the basement or first floor. Kitchens and bathrooms are common areas where these pests hide because this puts them close to food and water sources.
